Winnebagos

I did these paintings of Winnebagos for the Walpurgisnacht exhibition at Crimes Town in May 2008. In the show they were sub-titled 'Getting back to nature the American way'. I tried to think about being Pagan now but as we can't go back to the past any religious/spiritual beliefs must work in the present.

I really liked the way the owners had taken such proud photos of their 'winnebagos', which, incidentally, was a tribe of native Americans, in such a way as to use the great outdoor environment to frame it. They are symbols both of freedom, the right to conquer the wilderness, and of luxury. I thought The paradox about being in the wild and yet not a bit ridiculous, and that set against the backdrop of the massacre of the natives was interesting.
