This was painted for the show ' Walpurgisnacht', at Crimes Town in May 2008. The artists were invited to submit a work related to the Pagan month Beltane, marked by the eve before called Walpurgisnacht (featured in Goethe's Faust, for example). I had been painting the Houses of Parliament anyway but transformed it into a 'split house', the main chamber turned into a gateway with two smaller chambers representing dark and light.

On Walpurgisnacht the mortal world connects with the spirit world and causes mischief, 'deals with the devil'. It was inpired by the government's decision to go to war in Iraq. The 'eve of war', Blair made a deal with Bush in a gloom-filled Houses of Parliament.
